Pros: The actual shape is great. This is the most detailed Kit Kat shape I’ve ever seen—possibly the most detailed mass produced chocolate bar in general. All of the lines are so crisp and clean. He’s got pointy little ears, squinty eyes, a nose, a smile, and he even has a little skull broach holding his little cape together. Great stuff. In terms of the actual flavor and consumption experience, it’s a big Kit Kat. It’s very wafer-forward, unlike some of the other Kit Kat shapes, which have been more chocolate-heavy in my experience. So, if you love the wafer part of a Kit Kat, I think you’ll dig these Kit Kat Counts.
Cons: It’s too big. Kit Kats should be dainty. When Kit Kats are big, it’s easier to scrutinize the quality of the “chocolate” (not great) and the whole bar becomes a bit tough. Also, let’s talk about the name. Kit Kat Counts? I’m sure there are some legal reasons why they couldn’t call them Kit Kat Vampires or Kit Kat Draculas or even Kit Kat Count Draculas, but Kit Kat Counts just doesn’t work for me. If they were partnered with Sesame Street, then I’d be okay with calling these guys Counts. But as it stands, the name is just strange.
Conclusion: My quibbles aside, this is a great new Kit Kat shape (aesthetically speaking), and it’s definitely a good new trick-or-treat candy. But I won’t be missing it after November 1.
